SHRM Survey: Lump Sums the Single Most Popular Relocation Benefit

TRC Global Mobility | September 5, 2018

SHRM 2018 Employee Benefits A recent SHRM survey on employee benefits found that lump sum payments are the single most popular relocation benefit offered by the surveyed companies. Lump sums are offered by 28% of responding companies, down slightly from 29% in 2017 and 32% in 2016. The survey does not differentiate between lump sums that are one part of a company’s relocation package and lump sums that represent the company’s entire relocation benefit.

The 2018 Employee Benefits Survey, administered by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) in February and March 2018, assessed the prevalence of more than 300 benefits. Human resource professionals were asked whether their organizations formally offered each benefit or had plans to do so in the next 12 months. This report examines changes in the prevalence of benefits over the past five years.

Other relocation benefits most commonly offered in 2018 include temporary relocation benefits (16% of companies), location visit assistance (16%), reimbursement of shipping fees (12%), and cost-of-living differentials (11%). Read More

How to Make Relocation Industry Conferences Work for You

TRC Global Mobility | June 13, 2018

By Melissa Seitz-Medford, Manager, TRC Consulting Services

Global relocation industry conferenceAt the recent Worldwide ERC® Americas Conference in Dallas, I couldn’t help but notice how many individuals were wearing “first time attendee” name badges. Although this was not my first time at a WERC conference, I thought it was interesting and exciting to see how many new faces there were, and I looked forward to hearing what they had to say.

Forums like WERC provide a wonderful platform for relocation industry veterans and those who may be looking at global mobility with “fresh eyes” to share thoughts, professional challenges and solutions. Given all of the work that goes into producing these conferences, and the substantial investment companies make to participate, it is worth considering how you can make the most of your time at them. U.S. Immigration Law: Where Are We Now and What’s to Come?

TRC Global Mobility | April 4, 2018

TRC Global Mobility is sponsoring an upcoming Worldwide ERC Learning Zone webinar on April 10, 2018, presented by Envoy Global. Here is a sneak preview of some of the findings contained in Envoy’s Immigration Trends 2018 report. Click Here to Register for the Webinar.

tax reformAccording to Envoy’s Immigration Trends 2018 Report, 70 percent of employers say sourcing foreign national employees is very or extremely important to their talent acquisition strategy, yet 85 percent of employers say the current U.S. immigration system has had an impact in the hiring and retention of global talent into their organizations.

It’s clear that immigration continues to be an area of focus among employers and the U.S. government. Last year brought forward changes in policy, practice and rhetoric, and, unsurprisingly, the outlook for 2018 is similar, with even tougher restrictions being proposed.

Here are some of the potential changes that may be implemented in 2018. Read More

The Importance of Involving the Spouse/Partner and Family in Employee Relocation Discussions

TRC Global Mobility | September 21, 2017

Discussing employee relocationToo often, a company identifies an ideal candidate for a role that will require employee relocation and then communicates only with the candidate about the potential relocation. Ironically, the accompanying spouse/partner and family often endure the brunt of the move. Read More

Evaluating Corporate Relocation Companies and Selecting the Right Partner for You

TRC Global Mobility | August 16, 2017

World globe with airplaneIn developing specifications for a new, outsourced provider, it is best to begin with an evaluation of your current process and policies, and a frank assessment of how well they meet the needs of your internal customers (recruiters, managers and relocating employees). You will probably identify aspects that are working well, and that you want the outsourced provider to continue, and others that could be better. Documenting and clearly articulating your needs, expectations and goals will make it easier to evaluate relocation companies and to determine the parameters of the outsourced program. Read More

Supreme Court Allows Partial Travel Ban to Take Effect

Jerry Funaro | July 6, 2017

Gavel and passports - Supreme court travel ban infoWorldwide ERC just issued the following statement regarding the Supreme Court’s decision to allow a partial travel ban to take effect.

Arlington, VA— On June 26, the U.S. Supreme Court issued an unsigned order to allow the implementation of parts of an executive order signed by President Trump to temporarily suspend foreign nationals from six countries from entering the U.S. Based on the facts of the case, the Court formed a distinction between nationals who have “a bona fide relationship with a person or entity in the United States” and all other foreign nationals. The Court upheld the suspension of the ban for foreign nationals who have such a relationship, including individuals employed by a company in the U.S. Read More

How Immigration Reform will Impact Global Mobility

TRC Global Mobility | March 6, 2017

immigration reformFor years, comprehensive immigration reform has moved through the U.S. House and Senate in stops and starts. The new administration has signaled a more aggressive stance on immigration right out of the gate, and Congress is expected to take up comprehensive immigration reform once again. In the meantime, a great deal of uncertainty will cloud the process for companies and candidates alike.

International Relocation – Repatriation Benefits

TRC Global Mobility | October 25, 2016

international-relo-repatriationRelocating abroad presents challenges, but often the most difficult part of an international assignment is returning to the home country. The sad reality is that more than 25% of international assignees leave their employer within two years of returning home.

With such a substantial investment in each international assignment, it’s wise for companies to plan for a successful re-entry from the beginning of the process. Aside from closing out the host country household and moving the family back to the home country, companies should consider potential reverse culture shock issues the assignee or family may experience as well as the employee’s career path.
